Storms Hit UK New Year Celebrations
Britain has welcomed in the New Year but gales
and heavy rain wrecked celebrations across the country.
The Hogmanay street party in Edinburgh was cancelled,
as were events in Glasgow, Liverpool, Belfast and Newcastle.
But a spectacular 10-minute fireworks display
lit up London as an estimated 350,000 revellers descended
on the River Thames and the London Eye.
Up to 100,000 people had been expected the attend
the world famous celebrations in the Edinburgh.
People in Liverpool were disappointed after a fireworks
display at St George's Plateau was postponed until January 5
due to predicted gales.
The final decision over Edinburgh was taken after the weather deteriorated.
Sky News' Scotland Correspondent James Matthews said:
"There's no way a party could have gone on here tonight - it's a huge shame."
He said that street furniture has been falling from
every direction ahead of the party in which 10,000 fireworks were due to go off.
Matthews added: "The rain is sideways at the moment.
The only people running around are stewards and most of them are on their way home."
A Sky News camerman climbed up to the city's castle
and said it was not safe to walk there,
"let alone set off 2,000 tonnes of fireworks".
DJ Fatboy Slim's concert at Brighton beach is
due to go ahead tonight and events in Birmingham went ahead as planned.
